STORY

Cia Carpa Diem is a contemporary circus company formed by Luca Sartor and Katharina Gruener.

Luca and Ina contacted me explaining how they were going to premiere the show ¨Dolce Salato¨at Aurillac Festival in France and wanted to stand out from the crowd of shows performing on that extraordinary festival.

So we came to the idea of an illustration that transmits the very essence of their show, depicting the characters, the bread making process and the vintage taste of the scene.

And of course, their incredible skills on the acrobatic bike and the chinese pole!

CREATIVE PROCESS

First I took some reference photos of Luca and Ina, and of the scenography they have on stage.

From there I got the inspiration for the pose and the colors, that we wanted to be true to the vintage taste of the show.

I started wit a pencil sketch (or better said, with many pencil sketches). Once we settled on the final one, I took a photo of it because it was to big to get in the scanner!

I imported the photo in Procreate and did the inking work, the study of shadows and lights, and the color study.

Afterwards I colored the illustration in procreate, exported it to photoshop and gave the final touches to the ilustration there.

Then it was time for the poster design: I looked at old circus and cinema posters as Charlie Chaplin’s to get in the right mood.

After the layout and the colors were designed, it was just the matter of choosing the right font, filling up all the needed informations and sent it to the print shop!
