CODEX ALIMENTARIUS – THE FOOD WE EAT

MIXED MEDIA ANIMATION

Video For Codex Alimentarius’ 50th Anniversary at FAO, Rome 2013

Food is a sensitive commodity, which has travelled around the world since ancient times. We might not always know where it comes from, but we expect it to be available, safe and of good quality. The Codex Alimentarius Commission was created in 1963 by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade.

This video, produced for the 50th anniversary of the Codex Alimentarius Commission in 2013 shows how changing patterns in the length and volume of the food supply chain require ever greater vigilance from “farm to fork” in order to avoid foodborne disease. The Codex Alimentarius, or “Food Code” is a collection of standards, guidelines and codes of practice adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The Commission is the central part of the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme and was established by FAO and WHO to protect consumer health and promote fair practices in food trade.

STORY

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Codex Alimentarius, FAO commissioned director Declan McCormack to produce a video explaining the history of the Codex.

The director entrusted me with the reconstruction of the history of the Codex, asking me to develop a concept that included different techniques.
Based on his indications, I developed a concept that included stop motion, 2D and 3D animation, motion graphics and compositing.

Taking on the creative direction, I called the animator Daniele Scali to collaborate on this project for the 2D parts and the animator Sandra Hiralal for the 3D and motion graphics. I worked on the Stop Motion animations, on the rotoscoping and compositing parts and on the editing.

The music was composed by Keir Fraser while editor Stuart Mabey took care of finishing the final video.

This production was screened at FAO in July 2013, on the occasion of the World Conference for the 50th anniversary of the Codex Alimentarius.
